Robert Joseph "Bob" Miller (born March 30, 1945) is an American attorney and politician. He was the 26th Governor of the U.S. state of Nevada, serving from 1989 to 1999. He is a member of the Democratic Party. The son of a Chicago bookie, Bob Miller moved with his family to Las Vegas, Nevada, and graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in 1963 with honors. He graduated from Santa Clara University in 1967, earning a degree in political science. Miller received his J.D. degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California. Miller served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1967 to 1973, and later in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He served as Clark County Deputy District Attorney from 1971 to 1973. In 1978 Miller was elected Clark County District Attorney, and in 1982 became the first holder of that office to win re-election.〔 He was president of the National District Attorneys Association in 1984. Elected the 29th Lieutenant Governor of Nevada in 1986, Miller was sworn in for a four-year term on January 5, 1987. On January 3, 1989, Miller succeeded to the governorship when Richard Bryan resigned to take a seat in the U.S. Senate. Miller was elected to two full four-year terms as Governor, in 1990 and 1994, and served until January 4, 1999; his ten years in office make him Nevada's longest-serving governor. Lifetime term limits prevented him from seeking re-election in 1998. During the 2008 presidential campaign he co-chaired Hillary Clinton's Governors Council. Miller Consulting, which provides business to government and business to business advice and assistance.
